Blepharoplasty

What is blepharoplasty?

Plastic surgery of the eyelids, also known as a blepharoplasty seeks to correct skin surplus, excess fat and/or loose muscles. Blepharoplasty reinvigorates and rejuvenates the overall look of the face. It is possible to operate the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids or all four at once.

Who is a candidate?

The ideal candidate for such a surgery must be in good physical and mental health with realistic expectations. Before considering an eyelid surgery it is important to take into account possible medical problems, such as thyroid problems or conditions affecting the eyes.

Procedure

A pre operative evaluation will be required, such as an eye examination to help detect any abnormalities that may lead to complications during surgery. Incisions are made in the natural folds of the face to camouflage them as much as possible. From these incisions, hernias, unsightly fat and excess skin is removed. Dr. Zadeh uses very fine sutures that are non-absorbent and will require removal after the fifth day.

Anesthesia

An upper eyelid blepharoplasty can be performed under local anaesthesia while the lower eyelids are preferably operated under general anaesthesia for patient security.

Risks

Immediate risks:

Long term risks:

  • Healing abnormalities
  • Epidermal cyst
  • Tear secretion disorders
  • Ptosis (lowering of upper eyelids)
  • Lagophthalmos (inability to completely close the upper eyelids)
  •  Ectropion (inabitlity to completely close the lower eyelids)

 Post-Operative & Healing

Following blepharoplasty, it is normal to have some discomfort with a feeling of contraction of the eyelids. It is preferable to relax and avoid physical exertion during the first few days. The duration of the swelling and bruising can vary from one patient to another. Any pain or discomfort can be controlled with painkillers prescribed by Dr. Zadeh. Drops and eye gels are also prescribed to relieve the eyes and keep them moist. Sutures are removed by Dr. Zadeh at his clinic during the follow up visit, five to six days after surgery. Scars may remain slightly pink in the first couple of weeks, but can easily be hidden with makeup as of the seventh day.
